How the Human Body Maintains homeostasis when affected by SCA
Sickle Cell Anemia decreases the oxygen levels and increases blood pressure. In order to maintain body homeostasis, body metabolism slows down so that the body can survive off of the lower levels of oxygen. Since less blood is getting around the body, the heart rate increases so that more blood can be pumped around the body. SCA causes homeostasis problems such as, decreased life expectancy, shorter red blood cell life, hormonal irregularities and speen malfunctions. To help maintain these levels, blood transfusions and medications can help stop or hinder these negative side effects. (2, 13,14, 22)
